Birdies - Why are my nuts and bolts rusty?Updated 2 days ago

For our Birdies Legacy line The nuts and bolts may oxidize a bit on the surface (it looks whitish rather than deep orangish-red like rust), but the zinc coating on the surface of the bolts or nuts prevents the underlying steel of the bolt/nut itself from actual rust.

In regards to the -regular- Birdies beds: The beds themselves are coated with an Aluzinc layer; the zinc electroplating on the surface of bolts or nuts prevents serious damage to the bed itself.

Zinc itself is harmless in gardens as it's a common component of soil anyway -- in fact, plants use small amounts of zinc as a micronutrient - and it's nontoxic to people, animals, etc., so it's considered food-safe. Now, if someone uses something that -isn't- zinc-coated instead of what we provide, there's still a slight risk of rust forming in the standard beds.

The bracing kit rods are made from zinc as well but the dome nuts and washers are stainless.

For our Birdies Next Gen line all the hardware is stainless steel and should not experience rust.
